Elijah Wood Reveals ‘Happy Feet 2′ Details

Posted by lauren in Mar 02,2010 with No Comments

In an interview with WhatsPlaying, Elijah Wood has revealed a small detail from the as yet unknown story of Happy Feet 2.

Wood’s character Mumble the tapdancing penguin is to be a father this time around. Mumble’s son, though not entirely a secret considering the first film’s ending shot of a small dancing baby penguin, implied to be the child of Mumble and Gloria.

It is assumed that he mated with Gloria, who was voiced by Brittany Murphy in the original film. This may possibly change, due to Murphy’s untimely death. According to a previous report by moviehole, Murphy was signed to reprise her role as Gloria in the sequel, but had not participated in any recording sessions before her passing. So it is unclear if director George Miller has recast the part, or has written the character out of the film. It is most likely that Miller has recast the part due to the time and money constraints a rewriting of the script could take.

Katie Holmes, Elijah Wood Call Larry ‘Pants On The Ground’ Platt ‘Amazing’

Like many of you, Katie Holmes has been tuning in week after week to survey the talent the latest season of “American Idol” has to offer — and the star shared with us the one contestant that has dazzled her so far.

” ‘American Idol,’ I started again, which I’ve been watching,” she told MTV News. “I know [the auditions have been] wild. The pants guy! I mean, I remember the first season and then sort of I got … I didn’t watch it for a while, and now [I've been watching].”

Holmes’ “The Romantics” co-star Elijah Wood has been equally enamored with Larry Platt, who auditioned for the show in Atlanta and shared with the judges his little ditty “Pants on the Ground.” “I haven’t watched that show until this most recent season,” Wood shared. “I watched the first two seasons kind of religiously and then I didn’t watch it. So now I’m back on and it’s kind of amazing — the audition phase is the best part. ‘Pants on the Ground’ — yeah, it’s amazing. It’s mesmerizing.”

Mary J. Blige, who recently joined Kara DioGuardi, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson at the judges’ table during the audition stop in Atlanta, shared that she too couldn’t resist Platt’s charms.

“Wow, when the man was performing ‘Pants on the Ground,’ I couldn’t believe what was happening,” she recalled. “When he did the split and the whole nine, I was like, ‘I’m done. This show is over. Please get me out of here ’cause I’m just gonna burst.’ ”

Sydney welcomes patter of Happy Feet 2

Posted by lauren in Feb 08,2010 with No Comments

Production on the sequel to George Miller’s hit film Happy Feet has officially started in Sydney.

The original film which follows the story of a tap dancing penguin won the 2006 Best Animated Feature Oscar.

Today cast and crew returned to their roles, with dancers donning motion capture suits to rehearse some of the penguin dance numbers at Sydney’s Fox Studios.

Actors Robin Williams, Elijah Wood and Hank Azaria are also in town to lend their voices to the film for the next two weeks.

But Miller remained tight-lipped on what audiences can expect from Happy Feet 2.

“It’s a different story. A lot of the same characters, but it’s a different story with a lot of new characters,” he said.

Miller says Australia is well-placed to take advantage of the new technology now being used in film, as seen in recent films Avatar and District 9.

“This is an absolutely wonderful moment to be in the industry. Everyone thought cinema was dead and then we get the kind of movies you’re seeing now. And we’ve got the ability to make them,” he said.

But he says complacency in terms of investment in the film industry has also held the nation back.

“In NSW, in Australia, I do believe we’ve been too lazy. We’ve let others steal the march and now it’s changing,” he said.

“This is a brilliant time because there are so many jobs, and so many incredible talents and skills.”

The New South Wales Government says targeted investment has led to great returns, with the screen industry contributing more than $430 million to the state’s economy each year.

Premier Kristina Keneally says films such as Happy Feet 2 will provide a much needed injection to the state’s coffers during the three years of its production.

“Like so many industries, the local film industry has been doing it tough as a result of the global financial crisis and 500 jobs to our local industry over the three years is a very welcome boost,” she said.

Ms Keneally says in the final six months of 2009, an investment of $5.7 million towards 34 local film and television projects generated $69 million in expenditure.

“[It is] a good return on investment, growing this industry in NSW,” she said.

Miller says he is excited to be using the new motion capture studio at Sydney’s Carriageworks, which he says is the best in the world.

“The stuff we’re seeing already, I’m really, really happy with; where we’re going on it,” he said.

“Technology’s moved so quickly … the look already has improved and we’re just going to do our best to make the best film we can.

He says the success of places like Wellington in New Zealand as a film technology hub have been inspirational.

“I don’t think we would have even attempted this had I not seen what they did in Wellington,” he said.

“They’ve got the best talent pool in the world. Look at what they’ve done. Avatar, District 9 are two of three films nominated for visual effects.

“Wellington is a tenth of the size of Sydney and that economy has shifted dramatically. We go down there to get work done. That can be done here.”

Happy Feet 2 is scheduled for release in late 2011.

Viggo Mortensen played a prank on Elijah Wood every day for six weeks

Posted by lauren in Jan 18,2010 with No Comments

The actor – who starred alongside Elijah in ‘Lord Of’ – often plays practical jokes on set to keep his colleagues in a good mood and once played a prank which lasted for weeks.

He said: “There’s no sense in doing something, especially if it’s a hard job, if you can’t have a little fun.

“One time, I called Elijah Wood every day for six weeks pretending to be a long-lost German friend. Most of the calls were in the middle of the night. Fortunately he thought it was funny…”

However, during the making of the fantasy epic trilogy, one of Viggo’s jokes went too far and quickly escaladed into a “big crisis”.

He to Live magazine: “On ‘Lord Of The Rings’ we had these little people who were stand-ins for the hobbits. One time Dominic Monaghan, who played the hobbit Merry, and I mimicked this one particular guy who had a really distinctive voice and rang the producers to say that all the little people were stranded on New Zealand’s South Island with nothing to eat and no water. It became this big crisis and the producers sent everyone scrambling.”

SFIFF’s Midnight Awards

Posted by ashley in May 15,2009 with No Comments

Indie Wire – April 26, 2009

There were a few minor groans and a lot of last-minute refillings when the open bar closed during SFIFF‘s Midnight Awards reception as the guests of honor to took their seats for a Q&A.  The awards honor young actors, this year focusing on Evan Rachel Wood and Elijah Wood.

As the audience nursed their last drops of wine, some bullet points were gleamed from the duo:

— Evan holds a black belt in Taekwondo.  So does her mom.  The one time they sparred, Evan split her mom’s lip and burst into tears.

— Both Evan and Elijah’s mothers have been on set during their love scenes, on “13” and “The Ice Storm,” respectively.  For Evan it was the infamous topless scene.  For Elijah, his mom looked on while he and Christina Ricci “exchanged tongues.”

— At a CostCo—where Elijah goes to print photos—a fan approached him, complimenting him on staying a vegetarian.  She had watched him on Leno the night before.  Elijah wasn’t on Leno, and is not a vegetarian, realizing the fan was confusing him forToby Maguire.  But the fan was so committed in her praise that he went along with it.

— Evan said one Halloween a woman confused her for Evan Rachel Wood.  “But you’re hotter,” she told the actress.

— Evan is in talks to star in Julie Taymor‘s Broadway production of “Spider-Man.”  “It’s gonna be this rock and roll circus show,” she said.  Taymor directed Evan in her last film “Across the Universe.”  Just before Evan’s topless scene in that film, Taymor took her into another room, “to see the goods.”  They were apparently approved.

— Elijah has been attached to an Iggy Pop biopic for four years, a passion project of his.  The film begins during Iggy’s years starting the landmark punk band The Stooges.  “It’s hard,” said Elijah.  Despite Pop’s blessing, “this has been really hard to get this made.”  Elijah then announced the awards would now be a fundraiser.

— If a biopic of their lives were to be made now, Evan joked that she would want to be played by Dakota Fanning.  Elijah would pick Daniel Radcliffe.

— Evan starred in Woody Allen‘s “Whatever Works” as Larry David‘s wife.  “It’s more like a “Harold and Maude” thing,” the 21-year-old said.  After which, she apologized to the audience for conjuring that image.

— Elijah has a love for horror movies, and would like to be in one.  He’d also like to play a more fleshed-out villain than the one in “Sin City.”

— Evan’s dream role would be Janis Joplin and she has the pipes for it.  At one point in her early career some producers thought of grooming Evan to be a pop diva.  Evan quickly bowed out of that.

At the end of the night exec director Graham Leggat presented each with the Midnight Award—a martini shaker.

“It’s genuinely functional,” exclaimed Elijah as Evan unsuccessfully juggled the award with her mic.  The lid of the shaker hit the floor with a loud twang, to which Leggat announced “I hereby declare the bar open!”

Applause.
