Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood has reportedly agreed to appear in the upcoming FX sitcom Wilfred.

The new show – a remake of the hit Australian comedy – will see the actor play a man who discovers that his new girlfriend’s dog Wilfred can appear to him in human form.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Wood will be joined by Jason Gann as Wilfred. Gann played the same part in the Australian version and also co-created the original series.

The show is being adapted for US television by Family Guy producer David Zuckerman, who joked that the character of Wilfred is best described as “part Labrador retriever and part Russell Crowe on a bender”.

The series will mark Wood’s first major television role. Production on the pilot is expected to begin later this year.

This show is so funny in Australia. I want to play a random animal on it…
