Elijah Wood has my undying respect for several reasons. I mean, this guy not only totally saved Middle-earth that one time, he also signed the Apples in stereo to his Simian Records imprint, which ranks as a comparably important achievement in psychedelic indie-pop terms.

Now Wood has lent his star power to the Apples’ latest video, which premiered recently at Pitchfork. It’s for “Dance Floor,” the catchiest of many catchy tunes on April 20’s Travellers in Space and Time, the band’s surprisingly rewarding detour into futuristic disco. About a year ago, chief Apple Robert Schneider told me the in-progress album sounded “like there’s a party on a UFO, and everybody’s invited to come in.” The “Dance Floor” video doesn’t feature any UFO parties that I noticed, but there is a time-travel caper involving Wood as an alternate-universe gym teacher version of himself and Schneider as a mad scientist who lives to groove. As an Elephant 6 loyalist, I appreciate the in-jokes sprinkled throughout the clip. (I totally wore the green edition of Schneider’s E6 logo T-shirt yesterday!) It’s cool to see the Olivia Tremor Control’s redoubtable Bill Doss working the keyboards as a newly official member of the Apples, too.

A video clip over 2 minutes long of Elijah and Shirley Manson in ‘Oliver Peoples 2010 shades campaign entitled: ‘The Children are Bored on Sundays’ or in french ‘Les enfants sennuient le dimanche’. It is definite watch, if you haven’t seen it before. I already have images from the same photoshoot taken as part of the campaign in the gallery here.

You can see a clip of Elijah ‘teaching’ science lessons below in ‘Exploring the Universe’. Elijah had this to say about it: ” I came into that because I know one of the producers on it. When they were trying to get people to do the pilot, he asked me if I wanted to do it and I was busy at the time. But then they came back around when they got the deal with Nickelodeon, like “Do you want to be on an episode?” And I just loved what they were doing. I just thought for a children’s TV show, it was pretty amazing to have Biz Markie do a human beatbox of the day and Mark Mothersbaugh doing drawings that come to life. I just thought that’s the coolest TV show ever. They just asked me to do it.”

In an interview with WhatsPlaying, Elijah Wood has revealed a small detail from the as yet unknown story of Happy Feet 2.

Wood’s character Mumble the tapdancing penguin is to be a father this time around. Mumble’s son, though not entirely a secret considering the first film’s ending shot of a small dancing baby penguin, implied to be the child of Mumble and Gloria.

It is assumed that he mated with Gloria, who was voiced by Brittany Murphy in the original film. This may possibly change, due to Murphy’s untimely death. According to a previous report by moviehole, Murphy was signed to reprise her role as Gloria in the sequel, but had not participated in any recording sessions before her passing. So it is unclear if director George Miller has recast the part, or has written the character out of the film. It is most likely that Miller has recast the part due to the time and money constraints a rewriting of the script could take.
